No. 15 Tigers Finish Up Non-Conference Games on the Road This Weekend
Sep 08, 2021 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The No. 15 Tigers will hit the road for the first time this season after opening with a six-game home stand that saw them go 5-0-1, outscore their opponents 18-2 over the three-week period, and get the No. 15 spot in the United Soccer Coaches Top-25 Poll this week. They will face-off against Iowa State on Thursday night before heading to Drake to take on the Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon.
Memphis opened the weekend against a tough Kansas team who was coming off back-to-back wins over Saint Louis and Iowa. Sophomore defender Grace Stordy would notch the game-winning goal off a corner-kick just before halftime. The 1-0 lead would stick and give the Tigers their fourth win and shutout of the season.
"I could not be prouder of this group for battling and grinding out those two wins this past weekend," said Brooks Monaghan. "We scored some amazing goals and had moments of absolute brilliance that made this weekend so special."
Sunday's match against Alabama, who had just dropped a 1-0 decision to Samford in their previous game, was a battle. It wouldn't be until the 39' of play when Lara Kazandjian sent a ball into the box and found the head of Tanya Boychuk to give Memphis an early lead. The Crimson Tide would score just 43 seconds later to tie the match, but Boychuk struck again in the second half, this time with an assist from Momo Nakao. The 2-1 Tigers lead would get extended even further when Mya Jones netted her first goal of the season in the 73'.
Iowa State (2-3) picked up a 1-0 win on Sunday after holding the Cougars of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville scoreless and to just two shots the entire match.
The Cyclones Lauren McConnell got the game-winning goal in the 75' off a rebounded shot. Sunday's match marked the second shutout for the Cyclones this season and broke a three-game losing streak.
Along with McConnell, Mira Emma, Magdalena Keck, Anna Lindgren, and Morina Suter-Doerig have all netted goal for Iowa State this season.
The Bulldogs of Drake (3-2-1) are currently on a three-game winning streak that was capped off with a 1-0 OT win against St. Thomas on Sunday afternoon. Libby Helverson snagged the Golden Goal in the 93' of play when Makenna Shepard sent a ball into the box and found the head of Helverson.
Drake's offense started the season cold, being held scoreless for nearly 296 minutes before Hallie Peak netted the team's first goal of the season in the team's 2-1 win over Iowa State. Since then, the Bulldogs have outscored their opponents 4-1.
Along with Halverson and Peak, Emma Nagel and Alison Walls have scored goals for Drake.
"We've shown that we can defend our home field, but now we need to be able to say that we can play on the road," said Monaghan. "Not only are we playing in a different environment, but we are also playing on turf so this weekend will be a good challenge for us as a whole."
The Bulldogs will travel to South Dakota on Thursday before hosting the Tigers on Sunday afternoon.
