MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For the second-consecutive week, University of Memphis wide receiver Calvin Austin III has earned American Athletic Conference (AAC) honors, this time as the Special Teams Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. Last Monday, Austin III was named AAC Offensive Player of the Week.
In the Tigers' 31-29 win over SEC rival Mississippi State on Saturday, Austin III returned a punt 94 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to extend Memphis' lead. The return is the longest in AAC history and the best for any Tiger since 1975.
The punt return was only part of the story for Austin III, however, as the redshirt senior also had nine receptions for 105 yards and two more touchdowns.
Austin III ranks first in the nation in receiving touchdowns (6), second in punt return touchdowns (1), fourth in receiving yards (391), fifth in receiving yards per game (130.3), fifth in all-purpose yards (166.0) and 16th in receptions per game (7.0).
The Memphis Tigers will be back on the field on Saturday, Sept. 25 when the team hosts the UTSA Roadrunners at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT and the game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
