Tigers Road Trip to No. 23 Lipscomb, Saint Louis This Weekend
Sep 02, 2021 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tigers (0-1-1) are set for two road matches in four days in the second week of the season, traveling to No. 23 Lipscomb (2-0) Friday at 7 p.m. and heading to face Saint Louis (2-0) on Monday at 7 p.m.
Live stats are available for both games, with Friday's match at Lipscomb available to watch on YouTube and Monday's contest at Saint Louis airing on ESPN+.
"Going into our second week of the season, we are continuing to build relationships on the field while at the same time finding ways to get results," Tigers head coach Richard Mulrooney said. "I thought we were very competitive the first two games of the year at the tournament in Columbus and were maybe a bit unfortunate to not pick up a win in the second match. But now we have to challenge ourselves to find ways to win matches by finishing more of our opportunities and limiting those of the other team."
The Tigers began the season last weekend in Columbus, Ohio, against Ohio State and Dayton. Memphis dropped a 3-2 decision to the Buckeyes last Friday night and finished play with a 1-1 draw against Dayton on Sunday.
Toby McCallum gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute against the Flyers, after entering the match as a substitute seven minutes prior, and for his efforts he was named to the American Athletic Conference's Weekly Honor Roll.
"Lipscomb will be a real challenge, as they have always been for us, coming off a very successful trip to California," Mulrooney said. "That will be our focus, and once Saturday hits we will turn our focus to Saint Louis, who has also gotten off to a great start with wins over Louisville and Creighton.
"These two games are great opportunities for us to continue to grow and develop and get ready for our conference season."
Lipscomb is ranked 23rd in this week's United Soccer Coaches National Poll after beginning the season 2-0 for the first time since 2016 with wins over UCLA and San Diego.
The Billikens outscored Louisville and Creighton 6-1 in a pair of season-opening wins last week in St. Louis.
After this weekend's contests, the Tigers remain on the road to play UAB (Sept. 11) and Central Arkansas (Sept. 14), before the home and AAC opener is on Saturday, Sept. 18 against UCF.
