Tigers Receive AVCA Team Academic Honors
Aug 04, 2021 | Women's Volleyball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis Volleyball program received the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2020-21 season. It is the fourth consecutive year that the Tigers have received this honor and the eighth time in the past nine years that the Tigers have been recognized by the AVCA for their academic achievements.
"Having our team achieve the AVCA Team Academic Award this past year is certainly one of the proudest moments that I've had as a head coach, especially considering all of the adjustments and changes our student-athletes and support staff had to make during the pandemic," said head coach Sean Burdette. "The credit goes out to Lauren Lesser, our athletic academic counselor and the entire staff at CAAS. Lauren put in countless hours this past year to make sure that our volleyball student-athletes had everything they needed to succeed."
To receive this honor, the Tigers surpassed a 3.30 cumulative GPA. The Tigers were one of nine programs in the American Athletic Conference to receive the Team Academic Award.
"The women's volleyball program continues to impress me with their diligence in the classroom semester after semester, so this accolade comes as no surprise," said Lesser. "I am proud of this team and am lucky to work with a group of students and coaches who are so dedicated to reaching excellence, both on and off the court."
This is the 18th time that the Tigers have received AVCA recognition since the honor's inception in 1993.
