May 06, 2021 | Women's Tennis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis Tigers freshman Sophie Abrams, a Germantown, Tenn., native, has been named the American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Freshman of the Year along with earning unanimous All-Conference Team recognition.
Abrams played the No. 1 singles position for the Tigers and ended the season ranked No. 75 in the national Oracle/ITA rankings. She amassed an 11-7 dual match record and is Memphis' first rookie to be named The American's Freshman of the Year.
"We are extremely excited to hear of Sophie being recognized by the conference as both Freshman of the Year and all-conference," Tigers head coach Hayden Perez said. "This is a result of her hard work and dedication to her tennis. We have always known Sophie's game would really take off once she entered college tennis. As a freshman entering college tennis without a fall season and during the pandemic was challenging, and she did great to have the season she did."
"I'm so honored to have been chosen for these awards," Abrams said. "I'm very thankful to my coaches and team who have supported me this past year. And thank you to the AAC for this recognition."
