Tournament magic ends, Tigers’ season wraps up with 12-0 loss to ECU
May 28, 2021 | Baseball
CLEARWATER, Fla. – After an 11-1 run-rule victory over top-seeded East Carolina to start the AAC Championship, the Memphis Tigers felt the full wrath of the No. 9 team in the nation on Friday, as the Pirates returned the favor and ended Memphis' season with a 12-0 run-rule final. East Carolina starter Gavin Williams (W, 10-0) spun a complete game shutout, as the AAC Pitcher of the Year extended ECU's hopes at an AAC Championship. AAC Player of the Year Connor Norby did his part for the Pirates, as he went 2-3 with three RBIs and reached base four times.
With no score through 1.5, East Carolina (40-14) got on the board in the bottom of the second inning against Blake Wimberley (L, 2-9). A one-out single by Alec Makarewicz preceded an error by Alec Trela that put runners on the corners with one out. Lane Hoover gave East Carolina the 1-0 lead with an RBI groundout, while Ryder Giles followed with an RBI single. The Pirates led 2-0 after two innings, which proved to be enough with Williams on the mound.
After Memphis (18-39) gave up a run in the third, the Pirates busted the game open with three runs in the fourth. Wimberley issued a leadoff walk to Hoover, while a wild pitch and sacrifice bunt put a runner at third with one out. Norby made it 4-0 Pirates with an RBI single that ended Wimberley's afternoon, as Logan Walters entered to pitch for the Tigers. Thomas Francisco greeted the Memphis reliever with a two-run home run, as East Carolina's lead doubled to 6-0 after four innings.
Walker Brockhouse worked a scoreless fifth inning out of the Memphis bullpen but couldn't match it in the sixth, as the righty allowed four straight batters to reach after he retired the leadoff hitter. A three-run home run from Bryson Worrell made it a 9-0 lead for the Pirates, while Zach Agnos followed with a single that knocked Brockhouse out of the game. Makarewicz greeted James Muse from the Memphis bullpen with an RBI triple that put the Memphis deficit at double digits. Muse got Seth Caddell to pop out for the second out of the frame, but then issued consecutive walks, which ended his afternoon. Takoda Metoxen became the third Memphis pitcher of the inning, as he inherited a bases loaded situation. Norby came inches away from a grand slam to right field, as he lofted a ball high up into the gusting winds, but settled for a wall-ball, two-run single, which capped the scoring. The Pirates plated six runs in the inning and led 12-0.
Williams, who faced just five batters over the minimum, retired the Tigers in order in the seventh and locked down the East Carolina win. Williams allowed just four hits as he struck out 10 and walked just two. With the win, the Pirates advance to Saturday's AAC semifinals while the Tigers season came to an end with the loss.
The remainder of the AAC Championship can be seen on ESPN+ with the final set for Sunday at 11 a.m. on ESPNNEWS.
