Merriweather to assist USA Basketball team trials
May 12, 2021 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis Tigers head coach Katrina Merriweather has been named a court coach to help select the 2021 USA Basketball Women's U19 World Cup Team this weekend in Denver.
Â
Merriweather is participating with USA Basketball for the first time. She and Indiana head coach Teri Moren will assist the USA U19 coaching staff of Cori Close (UCLA), Aaron Johnston (South Dakota State) and Joni Taylor (Georgia) with on-court drills and scrimmages during the trials to select the 12-member team ahead of the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup, which is scheduled from Aug. 7-15 in Debrecen, Hungary.
Â
"People dream of experiencing the greatness that is USA Basketball as a player or coach," Merriweather said. "I am honored to be selected as part of this group and look forward to the opportunity to learn and teach in this environment with amazingly talented players and coaches."
Â
Merriweather was named Memphis head coach on March 29 after five seasons as head coach at Wright State that included three Horizon League championships, back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and a first-round tournament win in 2021.
Â
Merriweather recently filled out her Tigers coaching staff with the hirings of Tennille Adams, Ashley Barlow and Abby Jump. Adams will be associate head coach of the Tigers.
Â
All three were on the bench with Merriweather at Wright State for at least the last three seasons, and Barlow was alongside Merriweather for all five of her seasons leading the Raiders. Merriweather and Barlow went 113-47 in five seasons at Wright State with four postseason appearances, and the quartet was 65-27 with two NCAA Tournament trips and two Horizon League championships in the last three seasons.
Â
The Tigers have also added Tyler Frierson (C, 6-4, Wright State University) and Emani Jefferson (G, 5-6, Wright State University) to the roster for the upcoming 2021-22 season.
Frierson, a senior, and Jefferson, a freshman, arrive in Memphis from Wright State University, where they excelled under Merriweather's tutelage and were key contributors on the Raiders' NCAA Tournament team last season. The Raiders went 19-8 in 2020-21, were Horizon League regular-season co-champions and won the Horizon League Tournament. Wright State upset fourth-seeded Arkansas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to become the first No. 13 seed to defeat a No. 4 seed since 2012.
With the NCAA Division I Council approving a one-time transfer waiver, Frierson and Jefferson will be eligible to play immediately next season.
