MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis Senior Athletic Trainer Larry Reynolds has earned the prestigious Backbone Award for his efforts in the athletic department and working with the Tigers football program.
Given annually by the Southeast Athletic Trainers' Association (SEATA), the Backbone Award is designed to recognize an assistant athletic trainer who has played a major role as a "backbone" to the head athletic trainer. Reynolds earned the Backbone Award for the entire state of Tennessee in 2020, which was presented by the Tennessee Athletic Trainers' Society (TATS).
"We are so proud of Larry for receiving the Backbone Award," Memphis Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine and Head Football Athletic Trainer Darrell Turner said. "His selfless commitment to the student-athletes, coaches and staff on a daily basis cannot be understated. Larry is the backbone of our program and has continued to be a significant contributor to the overall success of our department and the University of Memphis football program as a whole.
"Anyone who works with Larry understands how innovative, intelligent and thorough he is in preparation and execution of the task at hand. The definition of this award epitomizes who Larry is as a person and as an athletic trainer, colleague and mentor. His clinical skills, compassion, and commitment as a healthcare professional demonstrate why he was nominated and received this prestigious award."
Reynolds joined the Memphis athletic training staff in 2013 as an assistant athletic trainer for the football program and later was promoted to Senior Athletic Trainer in 2016. A 2005 graduate of Indiana State University, Reynolds received a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training.
After graduating from Indiana State, Reynolds attended Arkansas State University where he received his Masters of Exercise Science degree. Reynolds' thesis was entitled Perceptions of Athletic Training Services at NCAA Division II and NAIA Institutions and was published through ProQuest, UMI Dissertation Publishing (Sept. 30, 2011).
Reynolds' post-graduate work began with a seasonal athletic training fellowship with the Cincinnati Bengals.
While a student at Indiana State, he was selected for two Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society (PFATS) Minority Scholarships, working with the Minnesota Vikings (2003) and the New England Patriots (2005). He also held a summer internship with the then AFL2 Bossier City Battle Wings in his hometown of Bossier City, La.
