Memphis tops North Texas for second-straight victory

DENTON, Texas – The Memphis Tigers women's tennis team picked up its second-straight win with a come-from-behind triumph over North Texas Monday night in Denton, Texas, 4-3.
Memphis has won three of its last five matches after also defeating Lipscomb on Friday, 6-1.
North Texas picked up the doubles point, despite Memphis winning the first match behind Camila Soares/Josephine Cao, 7-5. The Mean Green grabbed the next two matches to take a 1-0 lead in the contest.
The Tigers turned around and won the first two singles points to take a 2-1 lead. Katherine Cao earned a 6-0, 6-2 win from the sixth spot, and Sophie Abrams took the number-one spot over Lucie Devier, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.
North Texas grabbed the next two points to move ahead, 3-2, but Camila Soares tied things up at 3 despite dropping the first set, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
The decisive match was a hard-fought showdown in the number-two position between Memphis' Laura Bente and Maria Ponomareva of North Texas. Ponomareva took the first set, 6-4, but Bente buckled down and won the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4), and secured the match for the Tigers with a 6-1 win in the third set.
The Tigers (3-9) next play at SMU Tuesday night.
