TULSA, Okla. – Memphis men's soccer lost at Tulsa 2-0 with a pair of second-half goals going into the wind in Hurricane Stadium Wednesday.
With Irish-like temperatures in the mid-40s and 15 mph winds on St. Patrick's Day, the Tigers were hampered by an opponents' penalty kick for the fourth consecutive game. Tulsa freshman forward Alex Meinhard opened the scoring with a penalty kick at 54:11, marking his fourth goal of the season.
The Golden Hurricane scored 10 minutes later at 64:50 following a steal at midfield that led to a Ben Barkley to Malik Henry-Scott give-and-go that allowed Barkley to easily score with Memphis goalkeeper Parker Lackland off his line.
With eight minutes left in the first half, Memphis freshman midfielder Brandon Brackett made a tremendous defensive play to keep the game scoreless with a sliding tackle in front of the Tigers' goalmouth to save a goal.
Memphis fell to 1-5 while Tulsa, which is in second in the American Athletic Conference, improved to 3-1-1.
Emmanuel Santos led the Tigers with two shots with one of them on goal while Gurman Sangha, Maliek Howell and Mchael Chappelear, who was named to the AAC Men's Soccer Honor Roll this week, each had a shot. Lackland recorded one save while Tulsa's Lucas Cline made three saves.
Tulsa outshot Memphis 7-5, including 3-3 in shots on goal. The Golden Hurricane had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks and a 13-6 lead in fouls.
The Tigers will play host to the Golden Hurricane in a return game on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at Park Avenue Campus. It will be the first of two-straight home games followed by a March 27 match vs. Temple. The Tigers won at Temple 2-1 in double overtime on Feb. 23.
