Tigers set for NCAA Championships Friday and Saturday
Mar 11, 2021 | Rifle
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tigers rifle team is competing in its first NCAA Championships in seven years Friday and Saturday in Columbus, Ohio.
Competition in smallbore three-position (60 shots) will be held Friday, and competition in air rifle (60 shots) will be held Saturday. The overall team champion will be determined by combining the smallbore and air rifle team total scores into one aggregate score for each institution.
Fourth-year Memphis head coach Dan Hermsmeier was the Tigers' senior captain the last time the team qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2014.
"The percentage of people who get to experience something like this is really, really small," Hermsmeier said. "I'm going to keep telling our team to enjoy this, appreciate it and don't take it for granted. It's a really cool experience to be at this level of competition in whatever sport you're in."
"Going as a team is a better feeling than it was going individually last season," sophomore Taylor Gibson said. "Qualifying in general is really exciting, but being able to go with all of your friends and all of the people you've worked really hard with is incredible.
"There aren't words to describe the excitement and the joy I have for this group of people."
