MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis cross country teams will travel to Kansas this Friday to race in the 2020 American Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships Saturday. Hosted by Wichita State University, the races will be held at 4 Mile Creek Resort in Augusta.
After the NCAA postponed the cross country season from fall 2020 to this spring, many teams in the conference will be competing for the first time.
Memphis had the benefit of competing in one regular season meet on Jan. 23 at the SEMO Redhawks Invitational, where both the men's and women's teams placed second in their respective 8K and 5K races.
"Both teams are excited to get out on the trails and look forward to the opportunity to race at conference," said Memphis assistant cross country coach Ken Frenette. "On the men's side, we're missing three of our top seven runners, though we have a number of individuals who looked strong at the SEMO Meet on Jan. 23, so we're counting on them in closing the gap with our third runner.
"On the women's side, we're also missing potentially two to three runners, who could have been in our top seven. Once, again, it's an opportunity for our fourth to seventh women to close the gap to our number three runner."
The women's championship 6K is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m., with the men's 8K beginning at 10:50 a.m. The meet can be viewed live on ESPN+, with coverage beginning at 9:50 a.m.
The men's participants include Vincent Chenier, Jason Doland, Payton Gleason, Peter Kostarellis, Max Rathburn, Bradley Turner, Liam Walsh, Tate Wyatt and Zachary Wyatt.
The women's participants include Chloe Figgins, Sonsoles Martin Rodriguez, Lauren Metzger, Brooke Mussche, Madi Ray, Solstice Saliba and Chablis Shreffler.
