Memphis begins 2021 campaign against Lipscomb and Grambling State

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Tigers baseball is set to officially open up the 2021 season with five games this week. The season gets underway on Tuesday at 1 p.m. against Lipscomb, while the Tigers will host Grambling State for four games over three days this weekend.

The Tigers face Lipscomb for just the second time since 2001 and the fourth time in the last 20 years. In their last meeting, Mar. 6, 2019, , the Bisons walked-off with a win. Prior to that, Memphis picked up a two-game series sweep at home in Feb. 2001.
Lipscomb got its season started on Monday with a doubleheader sweep against Murray State. The Bisons got strong pitching performances in both games, as they held Murray State scoreless until the ninth inning in game one and the eighth inning in game two. Ike Buxton (1-0) allowed just three hits over five-shutout innings in the opener, while Logan Van Treeck (1-0) struck out 11 and allowed only one hit over six-shutout frames in game two. Outfielder Maddox Houghton led the way offensively for the Bisons in the doubleheader with at least one hit and an RBI in each game.

Grambling State, like Memphis, had its opening weekend canceled. Grambling State was picked to win the SWAC West. Outfielder Jahmoi Percival was named to the Preseason All-SWAC Second Team. Though he hit just .134 in 14 games in the abbreviated 2020 season, the outfielder was one of the top players in the SWAC in 2019, as he hit .323 with three home runs and 21 RBIs.
