DALLAS, Texas – In their first tournament of the season, the Memphis Tigers placed two players in the top-35 as part of a 13th place finish overall at the Trinity Forest Invitational. Both Ana Dawson and Brooke Veres finished at 14-over, tied for 35th place in the 74-player field.
The Tigers, who shot a combined 29-over 317 in the opening round, bounced back with stronger second and third rounds of 19-over and 20-over respectively for a final total of 317-307-307-932.
Dawson and Veres took different paths to a T-35 finish. Dawson struggled in her opening round on Monday with a 9-over but followed with rounds of 2-over and 3-over. She went 81-74-75-230 for a 14-over total. Veres was consistent throughout the tournament, as she opened at 4-over and followed with consecutive 5-over rounds for a 76-77-77-230 total.
Sophomore Victoria England snuck inside the top 50, as she wrapped up her second round at 7-over and replicated that in the final round. England finished at 19-over with a 77-79-79-235 score.
Battling back after an opening round 13-over, freshmen Rebecca Brink went 5-over and 6-over in the final two rounds respectively for an 85-77-78-240 finish at 24-over.
Abby Herrmann couldn't dig herself out of a first round 11-over, though she improved with each respective round. The graduate student lowered her score to a 9-over second round and used a pair of birdies in the final round to post a 6-over, her best round of the tournament. Herrmann finished 83-81-78-242, in 69th place.
Baylor picked up the team victory with a 14-shot win over second place Oklahoma State. The Bears went 284-294-287-865 for a team total of 1-over. The Cowboys finished at 15-over, the only team within 25 shots of Baylor.
The Bears had three players finish T-3 or better, as Hannah Karg shot a final round 68 to come from behind and win the tournament at 5-under, one shot better than Oklahoma State's Maja Stark, who led the tournament heading into the final round. Baylor's Rosie Belsham and Elodie Chapelet finished in a tie for third at 3-over.
The Tigers don't return to tournament action for nearly a month, as Memphis' next tournament is the Florida State Matchup, Feb. 26-28.
