Tigers Take on Nicholls in Final Game of 2021
Dec 19, 2021 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn.– Head coach Katrina Merriweather and her Memphis Tigers will come back to Elma Roane Fieldhouse for their final game before the holiday break as they take on the Colonels of Nicholls.
Memphis (8-2) is coming off a gritty win over the Bison of Howard University after not having a game for 13 days. The Tigers were led in scoring by Jamirah Shutes and Tyler Frierson with 12 points each while Madison Griggs came off the bench for eight points.
For the season, Shutes leads the way with 12.1 points per game while Emani Jefferson is adding in 8.4 points per contest. On the boards, Frierson and Lanetta Williams lead the charge with just under 12 combined rebounds while Shutes and Alana Davis are grabbing 4.6 and 4.4 rebounds per game, respectively.
Through the first 10 games of the season, Memphis is holding their opponents to less than 58 points per game and under 33 rebounds.
Nicholls (2-8) are trying to get out of the rut that they are in; the Colonels are currently on a six-game losing skid that was extended when they fell 100-72 to the Blue Demons of DePaul back on Dec. 14.
Chelsea Cain led the way for Nicholls with 18 points off the bench, 10 of them coming from the free throw line, while also grabbing six rebounds. Bryanna Washington, Chyna Allen and Krystin Green all scored in double figures for the Colonels as well.
For the season, Cain leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 14.8 points and 6.2 rebounds while Allen and Washington are averaging 13.7 and 10.4 points per game, respectively. As a team, Nicholls is shooting just over 38% from the field and 72% from the charity stripe.
This will be the second all-time meeting between the two teams. The Tigers and Colonels met back in Dec. 2016 where Memphis came away with the 73-62 win.
Monday's game set scheduled for tip-off at 2 p.m. in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Coverage of the game can be found on ESPN+ and on News Talk 98.9 The Roar of Memphis with Tyler Springs on the call.
