Oct 11, 2021 | Football
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis punter Joe Doyle was added to the Ray Guy Award Watch List this week.
The Ray Guy Award - named for football's premier punter - honors the nation's best collegiate punter. The Augusta Sports Council (ASC) created the award in 2000. Along with other awards such as the Heisman Trophy and the Doak Walker Award, the Ray Guy Award honors an important member of any football team.
Doyle and Memphis rank fourth in the NCAA in punt return defense (0.75) and seventh in net punting (44.24). On the year, Doyle has punted 21 times for an average of 45.3 yards, including eight of 50 yards or more and 10 inside the 20-yard line.
The Ray Guy Award winner is selected by a voting body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, national media and former Ray Guy Award winners. Punters are evaluated on their overall statistics and contribution to the team. Particular emphasis is placed on the following statistics; net average, percentage of total punts inside the 20-yard line and percentage of punts not returned.
The Memphis Tigers will return to Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 14, when the team plays host to AAC rival Navy at 6:30 p.m. CT. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN.
