Larisey, Moberg selected as Preseason Offensive Player, Goalkeeper of the Year
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Four Memphis women's soccer student-athletes were selected to the American Athletic Conference's Preseason All-Conference Team, including a pair of seniors who garnered position superlatives, as the league office announced its annual preseason poll and honors Wednesday.
In addition, the Tigers were voted to finish first in the league's preseason coaches' poll.
Senior forward Clarissa Larisey was unanimously voted as the AAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Moberg was tabbed the league's Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year. Along with Larisey and Moberg, junior forward/midfielder Tanya Boychuk and sophomore forward/midfielder Mya Jones were named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
"It's always wonderful for the kids to get the recognition," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "Hopefully this adds to their confidence going into our season. The reason you're named Preseason All-Conference is because of the past, and the past is the past. With this recognition there can be a bit of target on your back, and at the end of the day, it's important to use this the right way and use this confidence to get better every day."
The four Preseason All-Conference honorees are the most any school has had on a preseason list in league history. It also marks the fourth consecutive year Memphis has had at least three student-athletes selected to the AAC Preseason All-Conference Team.
Larisey became the first Memphis player voted as the AAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. The All-American registered her second Preseason All-Conference Team recognition, garnering the same honors ahead of the 2019 season. Voted as the league's Offensive Player of the Year last year, Larisey ranks sixth in career goas with 31 and third in career multi-goal games with six ahead of her senior season.
Moberg repeats as the conference's Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year while also adding her second career Preseason All-Conference nod. The Port Saint Lucie, Fla., native capped her junior year with AAC Goalkeeper of the Year and First Team All-Conference honors. Moberg ranks fourth in career wins with 37 and second in career shutouts with 27, which is also best in AAC history.
Boychuk added her third career conference honor Wednesday. The junior was named to the league All-Rookie Team in 2018 and capped her 2019 season with Second Team All-Conference accolades. Boychuk enters the 2021 spring season with 12 career goals and four career assists, including career-highs of nine goals and three assists last year.
A unanimous selection, Jones earned her first Preseason All-Conference recognition. The Calgary, Alberta native seeks to build upon an impressive freshman season, which landed her unanimous Rookie of the Year and First Team All-Conference honors. Jones finished her rookie season in 2019 with three goals and eight assists.
The Tigers kick off the spring season against UAB on Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. at Park Avenue Campus. Attendance to home matches this spring will be limited to player and staff guests.
