2020 inaugural class gets a virtual welcome to the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame.
MEMPHIS – Former University of Memphis running back DeAngelo Williams was scheduled to be inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in Nashville in August before CoVID forced the cancellation of the in-person event. However, the TSHOF will air a televised special on Sunday at 4 pm on WLMT CW30 which features the entire 2020 class, including the all-time Memphis great.
Williams still holds 10 school records after rushing for 6,026 yards and 55 touchdowns over his four-year career. In 2005, he was a Heisman Tropy candidate and averaged an NCAA-leading 178.55 rushing yards per game as a senior. He was named to 16 All-America teams, including the Walter Camp and American Football Coaches Association squads and was a Doak Walker finalist. After the 2006 Senior Bowl, Williams was drafted by the Carolina Panthers and played nine seasons there, setting the franchise's single season rushing record with 1,515 yards. He is the Panthers' second all-time leading rusher with 6,846 yards. He played his final two NFL seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and appeared in four NFL playoff games and one Pro Bowl.
His University of Memphis jersey was retired on November 5, 2006 when the Tigers hosted Southern Miss. He was selected to the M Club Hall of Fame in 2014 and was a member of the inaugural Conference USA Hall of Fame in 2019.
