Baseball receives ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award for fourth straight year
Jul 29, 2020 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For the fourth consecutive year, Memphis baseball was announced as an ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award recipient, the American Baseball Coaches Association announced.

Established in 2016, the award annually recognizes baseball programs that collectively earn at least a 3.0 team GPA on a 4.0 scale. The Tigers finished the 2019-20 academic year with a 3.40 GPA.

The Tigers, who posted a 3.53 GPA in the spring term, have turned in at least a team 3.0 mark for 11 consecutive terms and had 30 student-athletes named to the University honor roll at the conclusion of the academic year.

This week's announcement caps a successful season in the classroom for the Tigers, which also garnered national recognition. In June, senior third baseman Alec Trela earned CoSIDA First Team Academic All-America honors for the second straight year.

The Tigers are joined by Cincinnati, ECU, Tulane, USF and Wichita State as American Athletic Conference representatives on this year's ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award list.

The American Baseball Coaches Association has a long tradition of recognizing the achievements of baseball coaches and student-athletes. The ABCA/Rawlings All-America Teams are the nation's oldest, founded in 1949, and the ABCA's awards program also includes the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Awards, the ABCA/Diamond Sports Regional & National Coaches of the Year and several other major awards such as the ABCA Hall of Fame and Dave Keilitz Ethics in Coaching Award.
