2014 vs. 2019 Tigers on Thursday in online simulation
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis athletics department has announced its Football Simulation Showdown, an online simulation between the 2014 and 2019 Memphis football teams.

The simulation will be played on Thursday at 11 AM on the Memphis football Twitter account (@MemphisFB) and is presented by Umansky Auto Group.

The Backstory

When ESPN GameDay, the sellout of the Liberty Bowl and the 2019 Memphis football team's win over No. 15 SMU was named the top moment in the history of Memphis Athletics during last month's MEMory Madness tournament, members of the 2014 Tigers took notice.

Alumni from the 2014 Tigers engaged in some friendly ribbing across social media with the 2019 squad to take issue with the results, claiming their team was the top football team of the modern era.

The 2014 Tigers have a case with a 10-3 overall record, 7-1 mark in the AAC, a share of the AAC Championship and the program's first bowl win in 11 years with a 55-48 double overtime win over BYU in the Miami Beach Bowl.

On the other side, 2019 put together arguably the finest season in program history with a 12-2 record, AAC title and the school's first-ever appearance in a New Year's Six game in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic as No. 13 Memphis faced No. 8 Penn State.

In response to the friendly banter, a poll was conducted on May 14, and the debate was reignited across the comments sections on social media.

The Simulation

An online simulator will be used to produce a fully-detailed box score and play-by-play for this fictional matchup.

Memphis Athletics has internally simulated a best-of-seven series between the two teams. The series-clinching victory will be presented on Thursday on the @MemphisFB Twitter account beginning at 11 AM. The simulation will be presented like a real game with detailed play-by-play and interactions until a victor emerges.

Following the simulation event, the full results and details of the best-of-seven games will be revealed.
