Former Evansville standout chooses to continue career at UofM
MEMPHIS – Former Evansville standout DeAndre Williams is joining the University of Memphis basketball program.
Â
Williams, a 6-foot-9 Houston native, averaged 15.2 points and 6.9 rebounds last season for the Aces, whose season included an upset of a No.1-ranked Kentucky team. Williams joins a class that includes Virginia Tech transfer Landers Nolley II and junior college transfer Ahmad Rand.
"Getting DeAndre was big for us," said Memphis coach Penny Hardaway. "He is a skilled big that can rebound, pass and defend. And he brings experience."
Â
Williams shot 64.8 percent from the field in the 18 games he played last season as a sophomore before being sidelined by a back injury. Among his best outings were 26 points and nine rebounds in his debut against Ball State and 37 points (on 17-of-18 shooting) in a game against Miami (Ohio).
Â
A 2016 graduate of Forest Klein High School in Houston, he played the 2017-18 season at Nation Wide Academy, a post-graduate program in Oklahoma City. He was ineligible to play at Evansville during the 2018-19 season.
Â
During the 2019-20 season, Williams scored 20 or more points in seven games. His debut against Ball State was the best by an Evansville player in 33 years. He also had a 20-point, 15-rebound five-assist game, the first for the program since 1994.
