Jackson, Giles lead UofM; each is at 1-over 141 through 36 holes
AIKEN, S.C. – The University of Memphis men's golf team finds itself in a familiar position after the first day of The Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, S.C.
The Tigers are in fourth place after 36 holes of the 54-hole event, trailing leader and 22nd-ranked Clemson, Virginia and Furman. Clemson is at 17-under 543, Virginia is two strokes back at 545 and Furman is in third place at 4-over 564.
In its opening event of the spring last week at Colleton River, the Tigers finished fourth.
On Monday at Aiken, S.C. – on the Palmetto Golf Club's 6,617-yard layout – the Tigers got solid outings from seniors Isaiah Jackson and Nick Giles. Jackson, ranked 50th, fired a second-round 2-under 68 to finish at 1-over 141. Giles also shot 141, including an even-par 70 in the second round.
Jackson had two birdies (at Nos. 14 and 16) on his final five holes to close strong. Giles also played the back nine in 2-under, with birdies at Nos. 10 and 16. He bogeyed two of his final three holes to finish at even par. Giles started his round on No. 4.
Four strokes back of Giles was Guillaume Chevalier (145), while Phuripon Namkang posted two 73s for 6-over 146.
Clemson holds a two-stroke lead heading into the final round behind Jacob Bridgeman and Turk Pettit. Both finished at 7-under 133 to share the second-round lead. Pettit fired the day's best round opening with a 6-under 64.
The final round will be held Tuesday.
