Achiuwa posts double-double of 22 points, 22 rebounds in 20th win of the season
NEW ORLEANS – Precious Achiuwa thought he may have lost Saturday night's American Athletic Conference game at Tulane in regulation, but he made certain in overtime he wouldn't repeat his missed free throws.
Posting a remarkable double-double of 22 points and 22 rebounds, Achiuwa helped the Tigers to a 74-67 victory over the Green Wave. It was the most impressive of his 16 double-doubles this season.
"I was so excited that we won I didn't know how many I had," Achiuwa said of his rebounding total.
In addition to Achiuwa's conference player-of-the-week worthy performance, Tyler Harris scored 12 points, including a key 3-pointer that gave the Tigers a 60-58 lead with 14 seconds to go in regulation.
In overtime, Harris hit 4-of-4 free throws to help the team convert 12 of 14 chances. Achiuwa, who missed four consecutive free throws in the final 1:37 of regulation, made three of four attempts in overtime. That accuracy contributed to the win, the team's 20th of the season.
"I'm very proud of the guys for doing whatever it took to win," said Tigers coach Penny Hardaway. "I'm just proud of this group. They've put so much pressure on themselves to play well."
The Tigers (20-9, 9-7 AAC) once again turned in a dominant defensive performance. They limited the Green Wave (12-17, 4-13) to 28 percent shooting.
Memphis also had a 55-37 rebounding advantage. Achiuwa complemented his double-double with five blocks,
Christion Thompson led Tulane with a career-high 30 points.
Ahead by three at halftime, the Tigers were unable to extend their advantage until late in the half. On several occasions the Tigers built eight-point leads, the last coming at 57-49 with just under five minutes remaining on a tip-in by Achiuwa.
But the Green Wave continued to battle. A three-point play by Thompson and two free throws by Teshaun Hightower cut the Tigers' advantage to three points with 2:23 to go.
Memphis had an opportunity to stretch its lead with 1:37, but Achiuwa missed two free throws. A minute later, Achiuwa missed two more giving Tulane the opportunity to take the lead.
Thompson drove the lane and scored at the rim with 29.9 seconds left, but Harris answered with 3-pointer in the corner for a 60-58 lead with 14.8 to play
With 2.3 seconds to go, Hightower drove for a layup that was blocked by Achiuwa, but Achiuwa was called for goal-tending and the game was tied at 60.
At the end of regulation, the Tigers had an opportunity to win, but Achiuwa missed a layup off an inbounds pass from Damion Baugh.
At the half, the Tigers led, 30-27, despite committing 13 turnovers. The UofM built its advantage behind 46 percent shooting, 6-of-6 free throws and outrebounding the Green Wave, 27-12.
Achiuwa had a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) at the half, scoring mostly on lobs inside. Alex Lomax had three assists at the half.
Memphis led for most of the opening half going up 12-6, 14-8 and 16-10 early behind two 3-pointers from Boogie Ellis and strong moves inside by Achiuwa. Ellis finished with 11 points.
The Green Wave led 22-20 late in the first half, but their advantage lasted only three seconds. Malcolm Dandridge tied the game on a dunk and the Tigers never trailed the final 4 ½ minutes of the half.
The Tigers, the nation's leader in field goal percentage defense, held Tulane to 32 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes.
Memphis returns home Thursday to play Wichita State in the final regular season game in front of a FedExForum crowd.
