Memphis women’s basketball announces 2020-21 schedule
Nov 20, 2020 | Women's Basketball
Season opener slated for Nov. 29 in newly renovated Elma Roane Fieldhouse
MEMPHIS - The University of Memphis women's basketball team announced its 2020-21 schedule Friday afternoon, a slate that includes five non-conference games and 20 American Athletic Conference matchups with 14 total home contests.
Memphis opens the season against Southern Illinois on Nov. 29 at 2 p.m. in the newly renovated Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The Tigers then travel to St. Louis on Dec. 4 and will return home for five consecutive games against Liberty (Dec. 6), McNeese State (Dec. 12), USF (Dec. 16), Alabama (Dec. 19) and Houston (Dec. 22).
Southern Illinois has been on Memphis' schedule five out of the last six seasons and the Tigers have won 14 of the 21 games played between the two teams.
The Tigers will take on Liberty for the first time in school history. The Lady Flames went 20-11 overall and 11-5 in ASUN play last season and have been picked to finish second in the conference by both the ASUN head coaches and media members.
"Our non-conference schedule will allow us to get in some great competition before conference play begins," said 13th-year head coach Melissa McFerrin. "We have fewer games than normal, but still enough to assess our strengths and weaknesses early in the season."
The American Athletic Conference will have a 20-game schedule after making adjustments due to COVID-19. Memphis will open conference play against Houston on Dec. 22 at home.
The Tigers have home and away meetings against each team in the league.
"Preparation for this season has looked different for everyone, but we're ready to go," said McFerrin. "We are confident in our team and our abilities to make this season a good one."
