TIgers' 6-foot-9 freshman forward in running for national honor
LOS ANGELES -- University of Memphis freshman forward Precious Achiuwa has been named to the John R. Wooden Award presented by Wendy's Men's Midseason Top 25 list.
Chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts, the list comprises 25 student-athletes who are front-runners for the sport's most prestigious honor.
The Wooden Award All American Team will be announced the week of the "Elite Eight" round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2020 John R. Wooden Award will be presented by Wendy's during the ESPN College Basketball Awards on April 10.
Achiuwa, a 6-foot-9 forward from Queens, N.Y, is averaging 14.6 points and 10.2 rebounds through 14 games this season. Achiuwa is the only player in the American Athletic Conference averaging a double-double.
His contributions have helped the Tigers to a 12-2 start and a No. 21 Associated Press ranking.
It's been an award-filled week for Achiuwa. The U.S. Basketball Writers Association named him its Freshman of the Week for his performances against Tulane and Georgia last week.
Earlier this week, he was named the AAC Freshman of the Week for the second time this season after averaging 17 points and 12.5 rebounds in games against the Green Wave and the Bulldogs. He had 14 point and 10 rebounds in the UofM's conference-opening victory over Tulane and 20 points and a season-high 15 rebounds in a close loss to Georgia.
Memphis plays at No. 23 Wichita State (13-1) at 6 p.m. Thursday night.
