Precious Achiuwa gets another AAC honor

Tigers' 6-foot-9 forward is league's Freshman of the Week
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the fourth time this season, University of Memphis freshman forward Precious Achiuwa was recognized by the American Athletic Conference.

Achiuwa was named Monday as the league's Freshman of the Week following his performances in a 65-62 loss Saturday to Georgia and an 84-73 league victory Dec. 30 over Tulane. It marked the second time he has received the honor in three weeks.

Achiuwa had 20 points and 15 rebounds in a season-high 38 minutes against Georgia. It was the seventh double-double of the season for Achiuwa, a 6-foot-9 freshman from Queens, N.Y. Against Tulane, Achiuwa had 14 points and 10 rebounds. He averaged 17 points and 12.5 rebounds per game during the week.

Achiuwa has finished with 10 or more rebounds in nine of the past 10 games. He leads the league with an average of 10.2 rebounds per game. Coupled with a 14.6 scoring average, he is the only player in the conference averaging a double-double.

It marked the second time this season for Achiuwa being named Freshman of the Week. He earned the honor on Dec. 23. He was named Player of the Week Nov. 25.

The Tigers (12-2) resume conference play at 6 p.m. Thursday at Wichita State (13-1). Memphis dropped from No. 9 to No. 21 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll, which also was released Monday. Wichita State is No. 23.
