Tigers face Hoosiers on Friday, Wildcats on Sunday
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The first matches of the spring season have finally arrived for the Memphis men's tennis team. Memphis will first play at Indiana on Friday before wrapping up the weekend with a dual match against Northwestern on Sunday.
Match time against the Hoosiers is set for 4 p.m. on Friday, followed by a 12 p.m. start on Sunday against Northwestern.
Most recently, Memphis competed in the closing segment of the MTSU Invite last weekend. Competing against in-state foes Middle Tennessee, Belmont and Vanderbilt, Memphis posted 18 singles wins and nine doubles victories throughout the weekend.
Individually, James Story, Jeremy Taylor and Patrick Sydow swept their weekend slate in singles play, with Sydow earning straight-set wins in each decision. In doubles play, a mixed lineup yielded two wins on Friday, four on Saturday and three on Sunday.
Indiana kicked off its spring with a 7-0 sweep of Ball State last Sunday. After claiming the doubles point in straight wins, the Hoosiers' singles lineup continued the torrid pace set in doubles. All six singles courts won the first set of their respective matches, and five matches would be won in straight sets.
A team with just one freshman on the team, Indiana boasts a roster with four seniors. All-time, Indiana holds the series advantage 3-2 over Memphis, with the Tigers having won the last two outings.
Northwestern also claimed a victory in its first match of the season, taking a 6-1 final over Illinois State on Wednesday. The Wildcats took care of business in the doubles action, winning the point before going on to finish the match with five wins in singles.
