Volleyball Wins Home Opener

Memphis defeats Gardner-Webb to improve to 4-0.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis' Hannah Flowers and Meredith Wallace each downed eight kills to lead the Tigers to a 3-0 victory over Gardner-Webb in the opening match of the 2019 Tiger Brawl Friday morning. The two-day tournament at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse is Memphis' home opener.

The Tigers won the match by scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-13. Memphis improved to 4-0, and the Runnin' Bulldogs fell to 0-4.

Memphis returns to action later Friday when it hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the second match of the tournament for both teams. The Tigers-Lions match-up is set for a 7 p.m. (CT) start at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.

- Hannah Flowers hit a career-best .667 (8 kills/0 errors/12 attempts).
- Sabria Cooper recorded her second-best kills performance of the season with seven scores.
- Sabrina Bianco had her fourth 20-assists match of the season with 25 helpers in Friday's win.
- Meredith Wallace tied her career-high with 11 digs Friday. She also collected 11 digs in the Memphis win over South Dakota State Aug. 30.
First Set
- The visitors from Boiling Springs, N.C., jumped out to an early 5-2 lead, with four of the Runnin' Bulldogs' points coming off Memphis errors.
- Memphis bounced back with a 9-3 run to take an 11-8 advantage. Hannah Flowers keyed the run with three kills and one service ace.
- Gardner-Webb tied the set at 12-all on two additional Memphis errors.
- The Tigers went on a 7-0 run to grab a 19-12 lead and put the match out of reach. Kills from Meredith Wallace, Andrea O'Connor and Caitlin Schultz highlighted the spurt.
- Memphis closed the set with two Gigi Crescenzo service aces for the 25-18 final.
Second Set
- The Tigers built 4-1 lead and never trailed the rest of the way.
- Memphis extended its advantage to 10-6 on consecutive kills from Flowers and Sabria Cooper.
- A Jada Birkel kill pushed the Memphis run to 7-4 to grab a 17-10 lead.
- The Tigers took their largest lead of the match at 24-14 on a Gardner-Webb error.
- After the Runnin' Bulldogs cut the lead to 24-17, a Gardner-Webb service error gave Memphis the 25-17 win.
Third Set
- The set was close through the first 17 points with four ties. Memphis led 9-8 after a Tigers' attack error.
- From that point, Memphis steadily built its lead on the way to a 25-13 win and 3-0 match victory.
- Flowers and Cooper each had two kills down the stretch.Â
