Sep 30, 2019 | Football
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Junior defensive back Gabriel Rogers (Jackson, Miss./Callaway HS/Jones County JC) was named the American Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, Monday. He is the second Tiger this season to earn the special team's weekly award after Adam Williams earned the honor two weeks ago.
In the second quarter of the conference opener against Navy, Memphis trailed 20-7. After a Navy touchdown that pushed the deficit to double-digits, Rogers took the ensuing kickoff (his first collegiate kickoff return) 99 yards for a touchdown. The kickoff return TD was the ninth in four seasons for Memphis, the most of any FBS school, and tied for the second-longest in program history.
Rogers is the third player in four years to register a kickoff return touchdown with the Tigers. Tony Pollard tied the NCAA career record with his seventh return in 2018 and fellow NFL draft pick Darrell Henderson added one of his own in 2016. Rogers is the 14th player in Memphis history to record a kickoff return touchdown.
Memphis begins a stretch that will see the Tigers play three of the next four games on the road, beginning with the final non-conference game of the year Saturday, at UL Monroe. That game will air on ESPNU. Kickoff is set for 2:45 p.m. CT.
