TAMPA, Fla. – Two goals from sophomore Claire Abrey helped No. 11 Memphis to a 2-1 win at No. 16 USF on Sunday afternoon at Corbett Stadium.
After a score in the first half, Abrey tallied her first career brace with the game-winning goal in the 51st minute of play. Freshman Mya Jones also enjoyed a strong day offensively as the rookie assisted on the opening score.
"It was a real team effort today. It was one of those games that was not pretty," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "South Florida is a very good team. We had to defend a lot. It's lock-down defense and take your opportunities as they come. It wasn't pretty but it was effective. The girls did well with the game plan. You have to adapt, and I thought our team did well with that."
For the second time in as many matches, the Memphis defense withstood a peppering of shots. Despite being outshot 18-9 throughout the match, the Tigers' backline held the Bulls to one score.
In net, junior Elizabeth Moberg notched her ninth win of the year as the Port Saint Lucie, Fla., native registered a season-high seven saves.
"She's been great. She's in a good place," Monaghan said of the keeper. "The goal was a bit unfortunate. She had a great game and it was a team effort. They had to fight for 90 minutes. In a game like this, opportunities will be there. We were fortunate to finish more opportunities than they were today."
Abrey broke an early stalemate with the match's first goal in the 31st minute. After Jones created a turnover in the attacking zone, Abrey's one-touch attempt sailed to the open right side.
The Bulls leveled the match just three minutes in to the second half, but the Tigers would quickly answer. Off a set piece, Abrey put the Tigers back in front after a shot in the box found its way through the left side of the net.
The Memphis defense held its ground for the remainder of the contest, weathering 10 shots over the final 20 minutes to secure the victory.
Memphis returns home for its next match as the Tigers host UConn on Thursday. Kickoff from Park Avenue Campus is slated for 7 p.m.
