Rathbun's brace helps Memphis to 5-0 win
Oct 03, 2019 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – No. 9/14 Memphis women's soccer collected its ninth consecutive win and third league victory after taking a 5-0 decision against UConn Thursday night at Park Avenue Campus.
Sophomore Allie Rathbun etched her first career brace. The Tigers also found goals from Clarissa Larisey, Tanya Boychuk and Claire Abrey. Stasia Mallin added a pair of helpers, increasing her season output to a career-high nine assists.
In net, junior Elizabeth Moberg registered her sixth clean sheet of the season behind four saves.
"If you told me we would score five against UConn I probably would have told you that you were a little crazy. This was a great win," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "We got goals from several different people. It's never perfect, but in this league it's very difficult. When you get a win that's 5-0 you take it and focus on the next one."
The Tigers found opportunities early but struggled to find a goal in the opening moments of the match.
Larisey broke an early stalemate with her 10th score of the season in the 23rd minute. Rathbun tallied her first goal of the contest and second of the season with 31 seconds remaining in the first half to take a 2-0 lead at the break.
"I think you create those chances. At halftime we talked about not being on our toes as well as we could have in the first half," Monaghan said. "I thought we picked it up in the second half and got a lot of players on the field to rest for Sunday. Again, it was a great result."
Boychuk added the Tigers' third goal of the season via a penalty kick in the 52nd minute, while Abrey registered her third goal in the last two matches with a score 10 minutes later.
Capping the scoring, Rathbun added her second goal of the evening in the 74th minute to set the 5-0 final.
Throughout the contest, the Tigers outshot the Huskies by a 22-9 margin and tallied 10 shots on goal.
The Tigers return to action on Sunday as Memphis hosts Temple. Kickoff from Park Avenue Campus is slated for 1 p.m.
