Coach Norvell Post Practice Media Scrum | Day Three Highlight Video
MEMPHIS, Tennessee – The sound of popping pads dominated the Murphy Athletic Complex on the University of Memphis' Park Avenue Campus Sunday as the football team donned shells for the first time this fall. The practice is one of two for the team in shells before a Tuesday off day and the a full pads day on Wednesday.
"We got some more group work in today," Head Coach Mike Norvell said. "We had some guys flying around, they really had a good mentality through practice in every phase. Offense, defense, special teams, they all had really good moments today. There were a lot of pads popping, we're still working to keep everyone up off the ground and had a few feet tangled up, but I like the approach of what the guys had today. If we can continue to put that type of effort up in practice, we've got a good chance."
"One of the things I can tell three days in, these kids want to listen, they want to learn. They're put a lot of work into it in the meeting room and it is translating on the field."
Early comments from onlookers this year have focused on the team looking bigger, a notion Norvell backed up in his post-practice media scrum.
"We look different. This is the best we've looked physically since I've been here, just the length at all positions. (Strength) Coach (Josh) Storms has really done a nice job. I like our guys up front, both the offensive and defensive line, they 're moving well and playing explosive. Each position has seen growth in that area."
"It's still early," Norvell reminded media, "It's day three, but some guys have showed up and done some good things."
Memphs fans are now less than a week away from being able to get their first look at the 2019 roster. Memphis will hold its annual Fan Fest on Saturday, August 10 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Parking and admission to that event are free and plaeyrs and coaches will be available post-scrimmage for autographs on the field.
