Defense draws praise at end of practice 12.
JACKSON, Tennessee – The University of Memphis football team stepped onto the field at the Lambuth campus Thursday morning for practice number 12. After the offense rung up some big plays on Wednesday, the Tiger defense bounced back to draw the bulk of the praise on Thursday.
"You know, I thought it was a good day all-in-all for the team," Head Coach Mike Norvell said. "The defense, we put them in some challenging situations today, a lot of short yardage, goal line-type looks, and I thought the defense had a great day.
"Yesterday, the offense had some explosive runs and some big plays. It's good to see the defense, when their back was against the wall, they responded the right way. There were some unsatisfactory performances on the offensive side, and we've got to get that corrected."
The practice was followed by lunch and an afternoon of team-building activities. On Wednesday night, the team-bonding started with camp fires.
"We group together by position for the camp fires," quarterback Brady White said. "It helped me last year, since I had just been here for spring and summer. And this year, we have some young quarterbacks, so it's been a way for us to get to know one another."
The work on and off the field continues in Jackson Thursday. After late afternoon meetings and lift sessions, the team will have a guest speaker Thursday night.
Camp will conclude with a Saturday open practice/scrimmage, beginning at 10 a.m. Admission and parking to the scrimmage is free. The football field on the Lambuth campus is located off of W. King Street.
