Three other American vs. SEC games set for the basketball matchups in 2019-20
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Memphis will be among four American Athletic Conference teams participating in a men's basketball nonconference scheduling alliance with the Southeastern Conference during the 2019-20 season.
Â
The four AAC/SEC matchups were revealed Tuesday.
 Â
The Tigers, who will begin their second year under coach Penny Hardaway with the nation's No. 1 recruiting class, play host to Georgia on Jan. 4 at FedExForum. The other three matchups are: Ole Miss at Wichita State; Houston at South Carolina and SMU at Vanderbilt. All games will be held Jan. 4 with the exception of Houston at South Carolina, which will be played Dec. 8, 2019. Return matchups will be played during the 2020-21 season.
Â
The times for each matchup this season will be determined by the individual schools.
Â
Memphis and Georgia will be playing for third time, but for the first time since the 1996-97 season. The previous two games were played at neutral sites and the Tigers and Bulldogs own a victory apiece in the series.
Â
The Tigers will be led by a stellar freshman class that includes 7-foot-1 center James Wiseman and 6-foot-9 forward Precious Achiuwa, both 5-star recruits. Georgia counters with 6-foot-5 guard Anthony Edwards, generally regarded as the nation's No. 2 player in the Class of 2019 behind Wiseman. Georgia boasts the nation's No. 5 recruiting class.
Â
The American sent seven teams to postseason play in 2018-19 and had as many teams win 20 or more games. Both set conference highs.
