Magnifico Named to Mackey Award Watch List
Jul 19, 2019 | Football
MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Senior tight end Joey Magnifico has been named to the 2019 John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List released Friday. Given annually to the most outstanding tight end in college football, the recipient is selected by a vote of the Mackey Award Selection Committee and will be recognized at The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Dec. 11.
Heading into his senior campaign at Memphis, Magnifico, a local product out of St. Benedict at Auburndale High School in Cordova, has appeared in 40 career games with 25 starts. He has 51 receptions for 728 yards and 10 touchdowns.
A second team all-conference honoree in 2017, Magnifico is a three-time honoree on the Tiger 3.0 Club and was an AAC All-Academic team honoree last season.
In 2018, Magnifico played in all 14 games and finished fourth on the team in receptions (21) and receiving yards (363), nearly equaling his total yardage from the previous two seasons (365). He finished second on the 2018 roster with five touchdown catches and led the team in yards per catch (17.3).
Also assisting in blocking with the Tigers' offensive line, Magnifico has helped the Memphis chain gang block for back-to-back NCAA Consensus All-Americans (Anthony Miller, Darrell Henderson). Miller left Memphis with virtually every career, single season and single game receiving record, while Henderson led the nation in all-purpose yards and ranked second in total rushing yards. The 2018 offense set a Memphis record with 7,324 yards of total offense (3,919 rush/3,405 pass) and shattered the rushing record for yards (3,919/previous record: 3,215) with a pair of 1,000-yard rushers (Henderson, Patrick Taylor).
Magnifico needs four more touchdowns to catch Alan Cross, who holds the record for most touchdowns for a tight end at Memphis (14). Cross is in his first year as a Memphis graduate assistant coach after a three-year NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Memphis football gets underway with fall camp when the team reports on August 1. Fans can get their first look at the 2019 roster at FanFest on August 10. Season tickets for the six-game home stand, which includes the season opener on August 31 against Ole Miss are available online now at www.GoTigersGoTix.com.
