Tigers' freshman is featured guest after being named Gatorade National Boys Player of the Year
LOS ANGELES – University of Memphis freshman center James Wiseman stepped away from the practice courts at the Laurie-Walton Family Basketball Center Wednesday to spend part of the evening on a red carpet.

Wiseman, the nation's No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2019, was a special guest at Wednesday's ESPY Awards in Los Angeles. He was in LA along with the other finalists for the Gatorade National Boys and National Girls Athlete of the Year Awards.

The finalists for the National Boys and National Girls Athlete of the Year were honored Tuesday at the 17th Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year Awards. The event was co-hosted by former NFL and Super Bowl-winning quarterback Peyton Manning and ESPN's Sage Steele.

Bobby Whitt Jr., the No. 2 pick in last month's Major League Baseball draft, was named the Boys Athlete of the Year and softball pitcher Kelly Lynch, who went 17-0 with a 0.27 earned-run average, was named Girls Athlete of the Year.

The 7-foot-1 Wiseman was named Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year in March after leading East High to the Class AAA state championship game. Wiseman averaged 25.8 points, 14.8 rebounds and 5.5 blocks during the regular season. He led East High to the 2018 Class AAA state title.
Wiseman and the UofM men's basketball team will begin practices soon for their mid-August international trip to the Bahamas, where they will play four exhibition games against Bahamian competition.
