Ex-Tiger basketball star opens play in the NBA summer league action
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Former University of Memphis guard Jeremiah Martin, the 10th-leading scorer in school history, will begin his NBA career July 1 as a member of the Miami Heat's summer league roster.
Martin will be part of the team that plays three games in three days in the California Classic in Sacramento, Calif., before traveling to Las Vegas to participate in the NBA Summer League. In Las Vegas, the summer league teams play four games starting July 5 before advancing to compete in a tournament-style event. The championship is scheduled for July 15.
Among those on the Heat's summer league roster are Heat players Duncan Robinson, Yante Maten and Kendrick Nunn, along with first-round pick Tyler Herro of Kentucky.
A native Memphian, Martin signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Heat last month after not being selected in the NBA Draft. In an Exhibit 10 deal, a player can receive up to a $50,000 bonus is he signs with the team's G-League affiliate after being waived by the parent club. The Heat's G-League affiliate is in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
In his four seasons at Memphis, Martin developed into one of the program's most-prolific scorers. He had two 40-point games and averaged 19.7 points and 4.4 assists as a senior. He finished his career with 1,625 points.
Behind Martin, the Tigers earned their first post-season berth since the 2013-14 season, reaching the second round of the NIT before losing at Creighton.
