Star midfielder led Earthquakes to both MLS Cup Championships
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis men's soccer head coach Richard Mulrooney was inducted into the San Jose Earthquakes Hall of Fame after a celebration during halftime against the Chicago Fire on May 18.
Mulrooney was drafted by the then-San Jose Clash with the third overall pick in the 1999 MLS Draft after a Hall of Fame career at Creighton University. He found himself starting almost immediately, as Mulrooney was named a starter in 25 of his 32 rookie-season matches.
In his six seasons with the Earthquakes, Mulrooney tallied four goals and 45 assists, the second-most assists in Earthquakes history. The midfielder was a two-time All-Star during his time in San Jose, earning the All-Star nod in 2002 and in 2004.
With Mulrooney leading the squad, the Earthquakes claimed both of the program's MLS Cup championships, winning in 2001 over the LA Galaxy and in 2003 against the Chicago Fire. Mulrooney scored what would prove to be the game-winner in the 50th minute of the 2003 MLS Cup Finals, which finished 4-2.
As head coach at Memphis, Mulrooney wrapped up his fifth season with the Tigers in 2018. This past season, he coached Memphis to the program's first American Athletic Conference Championship win, a 3-1 quarterfinal victory over USF.
