Goodman, Durham earn All-AAC honors
CLEARWATER, Fla. – Ahead of the 2019 American Athletic Conference Championships, Memphis freshman Hunter Goodman was tabbed the AAC Newcomer Position Player of the Year while the Tigers also landed a pair of players on all-conference teams, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
In addition to being selected the league's Newcomer Position Player of the Year, Goodman also received first-team accolades as an outfielder. On the mound, redshirt junior Chris Durham was named to the AAC second team.
Goodman earned Memphis' first Newcomer of the Year honor since the Tigers joined The American and became the first player in program history to earn a league's rookie award since Dan Guehne in 1994 (Great Midwest Conference).
Goodman, the first position player in school history to earn a conference's Newcomer of the Year accolade, leads the team in average (.332), hits (76), runs (50), RBI (66), total bases (134) and home runs (13). The Arlington, Tenn., native leads The American in RBI, while his 76 hits and 13 home runs are the best among the league's freshmen numbers.
In his first season of action in the Blue and Gray, Durham posted a 3.57 ERA throughout the regular season, the second-best mark on the team behind closer Colton Neel. Durham tallied a 4-3 record with 72 strikeouts in 68 innings pitched. His 3.57 ERA mark is ninth lowest in the league while his strikeout total ranks seventh.
Additionally, Durham registered five quality starts in his last seven appearances and earned a spot on the AAC's Weekly Honor Roll twice this season (April 8 and May 6). The Collierville, Tenn., native was also a part of a staff that set the team's single-season strikeout record with 488 punch-outs in 2019.
Goodman, Durham and the Tigers will open the 2019 AAC Championships on Tuesday against Cincinnati. First pitch from Spectrum Stadium is set for 3 p.m. (CT).
