Fletcher Puts Opening Round in the Books at NCAA Championships
May 17, 2019 | Women's Golf
Only four of 132 golfers finish at par or below on day one.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Senior women's golfer Michaela Fletcher carded an opening round 81 (+8) in the first round of the NCAA Women's Golf Championships at The Blessings Golf Course, Friday. She will start her second round off Saturday in a tie for 81st among the 132 golfers.
The field knew the course would be a challenge going in and there were just four rounds of par or lower from the 132 golfers. Arizona's Bianca Pagdanganan leads the field at the end of day one with a 69 (-4), while teammate Haley Moore is in a tie for second with Texas' Emilee Hoffmann and Arkansas' Maria Fassi after day one 72s (-1).
Fletcher's day started on 10. Bogeys and 11, 12, 13 and 14 found her at +4 quickly and she battled back with a birdie on 16 to get to +3. A bogey on 18 put her opening half of the day in the books with a 40 (+4). On one, Fletcher found trouble, recording a triple. She then bogeyed two and four before finding some calm on the last five holes. After pars at five and six, she birdied seven, and got par on both eight and nine to close her day with some momentum heading into Saturday's second round.
Texas and host Arkansas are tied for the team lead at the end of day one with 302's (+10). Stanford and defending champion Arizona are two strokes back at 304 while Duke rounds out the top five at 305. Number one ranked USC is sixth at 306. All six of the top teams went off in the afternoon wave on Friday. Fletcher will go off in the afternoon wave on Saturday, teeing off at 12:50 p.m.
