Tigers preparing to play in first NCAA postseason since 2016
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis will open play in the 2019 NCAA Division 1 Men's Golf Championships May 13 at the Athens (Georgia) Regional, the Tigers' first trip to the NCAA regionals since 2016.
Â
Memphis learned of its regional destination late Wednesday night during the NCAA selection show televised by the Golf Channel. Tigers coach Blake Smart and his team watched the selection show at the UofM's Park Avenue Campus practice facility, the Frank Flautt Center.
Â
"The regionals are the most stressful week in college golf," Smart said. "It's so much fun. Everyone has something on the line. To get it right is great. If not you go home."
Â
The Tigers earned the postseason invitation by winning the American Athletic Conference Championship last week at Palm Harbor, Fla. The UofM won its first AAC title by finishing at even-par 852, or 12 strokes better than runner-up SMU. Four-time defending champion USF was 18 strokes back.
Â
Vanderbilt is the top seed in the Athens Regional, one of six NCAA regionals. Five teams from each regional advance to the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Â
Bradley Bawden, Isaiah Jackson and Chase Harris led Memphis during the season. Bawden's 71.5 stroke average is the best on the team and he is on pace to establish a single-season record. Jackson averages 72.2 strokes per round and Harris averages 73.3 strokes.
Â
Bawden and Harris were named to The AAC All-Conference team earlier on Wednesday. Smart earned Coach of the Year honors.
Â
Bawden and Jackson own individual titles this season. Bawden, a senior from  Head, S.C. Jackson, a junior from Red Bay, Ala., was medalist at the East Bay Deli Classic in November at Kiawah, S.C.
Â
Harris, a senior from Jackson, Tenn., finished strong by firing a 2-under 69 on the final day of the AAC Championship and ended in a tie for fifth place, his best result of the spring.
Â
Nick Giles, a junior from Germantown, was a regular during the spring and his first-round stroke average (70.14) leads the team. Overall, he is averaging 72.7 strokes per round, third-best on the team.
