Bawden paces Tigers with 1-under 70; three others post 72s
PALM HARBOR, Fla. – Bradley Bawden fired a 1-under 70 and three teammates shot identical scores of 1-over 72 to help the University of Memphis open the three-day American Athletic Conference Championships in impressive fashion.
Â
The Tigers shot 2-over 286 Sunday at the Copperhead Course at the Innisbrook Resort and trail first-round leader SMU by only one stroke going into Monday's second round at the par 71, 7,125-yard layout.
Â
SMU's McClure Meissner is the first-round individual leader. He shot 5-under 66, three strokes better than USF's Albin Bergstrom. USF, the four-time defending champion, is in third place at 6-over 290.
Â
In addition to Bawden, the Tigers got 1-over par scores of 72 from Chase Harris, Borja Martin and Guillaume Chevalier for their 286. Memphis has never won an American Athletic Conference title, which brings with it automatic entry into the NCAA Tournament.
Â
The Tigers' best result in an AAC Championship came in 2016 when they were runner-up to USF. USF has won four straight titles, all by 13 or more strokes.
