Apr 19, 2019 | Men's Tennis
ORLANDO, Fla. – A courageous comeback fell short as Memphis men's tennis dropped a 4-3 decision against No. 46 USF Friday morning in the quarterfinal round of The American Tennis Championships.
Memphis (11-14) erased a 3-0 deficit with wins at the bottom three courts of its singles lineup to draw the match even, but USF seized a second-set win on court 3 to build momentum and seal the contest.
The Bulls (15-7) won the opening doubles point behind wins on courts 1 and 3. Memphis duo Jan Pallares and Patrick Sydow were in a tiebreak before their match was left unfinished.
USF turned the momentum into two wins in singles at the top two courts to build a 3-0 lead.
Sydow began the Memphis rally with a straight-set decision on court 6 and put Memphis on the board.
On court 4, Matt Story dropped the first set and faced a 5-4 deficit in the second. The junior held serve and then broke for an edge in the second frame, while another hold clinched the set. In the third, Story cruised to a 6-2 win to draw Memphis closer at 3-2.
Oscar Cutting tied the match for the Tigers on court 5. Despite splitting the first two sets, Cutting broke serve in the final game of the match for a three-set victory.
Freshman Jeremy Taylor claimed his first set on court 3 before USF evened the match in the second set. An early break in the third set helped propel the Bulls to the match win.
