Apr 16, 2019 | Women's Golf
The third place finish is the highest finish since joining The American in 2013
PALM COAST, Fla. – The University of Memphis women's golf team made history Tuesday afternoon with a third-place finish in The American Women's Championship, the highest finish since the inception of the American Athletic Conference in 2013.
The Tigers rattled off a Memphis conference championship-low 289 in the third round to jump ahead of ECU for third place. Memphis finished with a three-day total of 885. The highest finish prior to this season was fourth place in 2014 and 2018.
"It is very exciting to have our best finish in a conference championship since joining The American six years ago," said head coach Beth Harrelson. "We have a great golf conference and to finish in the top three is a testament to the hard work and determination this group has had all season."
In addition to the strong team showing, Memphis had two golfers finish with top-10 finishes in Michaela Fletcher and Ana Dawson. Fletcher carded an even par 72 Tuesday to finish in a tie for sixth place. Fletcher was one of eight players to score even or better for the championship.
"The team had a sense of calmness and determination as they moved up the leaderboard today," added Harrelson. "We had several putts that could have dropped, but we continued to remain calm to finish strong in the championship."
Dawson remained consistent and finished with her third-straight 73 to finish in sole possession of 10th place. Much like her scoring for the tournament, her 1-over round included 15 pars, one birdie and two bogeys.
As a team, Memphis carded three 72's and one 73 to finish with a three-stroke edge over ECU. In addition to Fletcher, Sydney Colwill and Madison Thomas turned in even par rounds and finished the championship in a tie for 23rd place with a three-day total of 225. Colwill saw herself as low as two-under after a birdie on 14. Colwill's 72 was her best round in the conference championship.
Thomas bounced back from a bogey-double-bogey start to finish the final 16 holes at three-under, including a birdie on 17 to move to even on the day.
Victoria Gallegos carded a 78 on Tuesday and finished the championship with a three-day total of 225.
Houston won the team title for a third time with a championship score of 13-under par. UCF finished in second place, just four strokes ahead of Memphis at 881. Leonie Harm from Houston earned individual medalist honors after carding a 5-under 67 on Tuesday to finish 8-under par for the championship.
The Tigers will now wait for the NCAA Selection Show set to take place on Wednesday, April 24 at 4:30 p.m. CT on the Golf Channel in hopes of an individual or team berth in the NCAA Regional.
