Mulrooney led Earthquakes to both of the team's MLS Cups
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The San Jose Earthquakes announced on Monday that men's soccer head coach Richard Mulrooney will be inducted into the Earthquakes Hall of Fame during halftime of the team's match against the Chicago Fire on Saturday, May 18. Mulrooney played for the Earthquakes for six seasons, from 1999-2004.
Mulrooney was drafted by the then-San Jose Clash with the third overall pick in the 1999 MLS Draft after a Hall of Fame career at Creighton University. Starting almost immediately, Mulrooney was named a starter in 25 of the 32 matches in which he appeared during his rookie season.
In his six seasons with the Earthquakes, Mulrooney tallied four goals and 45 assists, the second-most helpers in Earthquakes history. He was a two-time All-Star during his time in San Jose, earning the selections in 2002 and in 2004.
The midfielder led the Earthquakes to both of the program's MLS Cup championships, winning in 2001 over the LA Galaxy and in 2003 against the Chicago Fire. Mulrooney scored what would prove to be the game-winner in the 50th minute of the 2003 MLS Cup Finals, which finished 4-2.
As head coach at Memphis, Mulrooney is in his fifth season with the Tigers. This past season, he coached Memphis to the program's first American Athletic Conference Championship win, a quarterfinal victory over USF.
