Tigers' senior guard named to American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis senior guard Jeremiah Martin earned a spot on the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll Monday for his near record-setting performance in Saturday's game at USF.
Â
In the Tigers' 84-78 loss to the Bulls, Martin scored a career-high 41 points, one shy of the league record set by Russ Smith of Louisville in 2014. Each of Martin's 41 points came in the second half as the Tigers nearly recovered from a 25-point halftime deficit.
Â
Martin began his barrage early in the second half after he had missed his only three shot attempts in the opening half. Martin scored on a layup 40 seconds into the half and spent the next 19 minutes scoring in every conceivable fashion.
Â
Martin made 13 of 17 shots in the second half, including seven of his eight 3-point attempts. He also made 8 of 12 free throws and had six steals. The 13 field goals and seven 3-pointers were career highs and the six steals tied a career high.
Â
At one point in the second half, Martin made four 3-pointers in a four-minute stretch to help the Tigers trim a 38-13 halftime deficit to 13 points, 59-46. His final 3-pointer with 33 seconds left made it a six-point game (82-76), the closest the Tigers had been since early in the first half.
Â
With his 41 points, Martin moved to No. 21 on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,275 points. His outburst represented the first 40-point game by a Tiger player in 22 years. Marcus Moody scored 41 at Oklahoma in 1997.
Martin became the eighth player in school history to score 40 or more points in a game. Larry Finch set the record with 48 points against St. Joseph's on Jan. 20, 1973.
In addition to his 41-point effort, Martin had 14 points, six assists and four steals in the UofM's 95-79 loss at Tulsa Wednesday at the Reynolds Center.
After two road games, the Tigers return home Thursday. Memphis (13-9, 5-4 The American) plays Cincinnati (19-3, 8-1 The American) at 6 p.m. at FedExForum on ESPN2.
