American Athletic Conference recognizes Tiger point guard for 56-point week
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis point guard Jeremiah Martin is making inclusion on the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll a habit.
For the third time in as many weeks, Martin was named to the honor for his performances in the Tigers' games last week at ECU and UCF. Martin scored 56 points in the two games and made 19 of his 23 free attempts.
A senior who attended Mitchell High in Memphis, Martin scored 31 points in the UofM's 79-69 victory Wednesday at ECU and 25 in a hard-fought loss Saturday at UCF. He has been named to the Honor Roll four times this season.
In the win at ECU, Martin scored 12 of the team's final 17 points to preserve the victory. ECU had taken a 61-60 lead with 8:11 left before Martin stepped up. He connected on 5 of 6 free throws in the final minute.
At UCF, Martin directed a late charge that cut a 12-point Knights' advantage with seven minutes remaining to one point (69-68) with two minutes left. Martin scored 12 points during the late-game stretch, including a 3-pointer and a three-point play.
Martin's 56 points gave him 1,369 for his career, or 12 shy of tying Robert Dozier (2005-09) for 16th place on the school's all-time list. He recently passed head coach Penny Hardaway on the career scoring list. The 30-point game at ECU was the fourth of Martin's career.
The Tigers (15-11, 7-6 The American) return home Wednesday night to play Tulane (4-20, 0-12 The American). Tipoff is 6 p.m. at FedExForum.
