Tigers' sophomore guard earns spot on league's weekly honor roll

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis sophomore guard Alex Lomax was named Monday to the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll for his contributions in victories last week over Bradley and UAB.

Lomax, a valuable reserve, scored a career-high 17 points and added three steals in a 71-56 win over Bradley at FedExForum. Lomax scored 10 of his points in the first half, including several key baskets when Bradley rallied before halftime. In the second half, he hit 4-of-4 free throws in the final minutes to help the Tigers maintain a double-digit cushion

In Saturday's win over former league rival UAB, Lomax scored all 10 of his points in the second half and added three assists to allow the Tigers to overcome a 17-point second-half deficit and win their sixth straight.

Lomax scored his points in the game's final 11 minutes, starting with a three-point play that trimmed the Memphis deficit to eight points. Another three-point play with 3:29 remaining closed to UAB lead to 55-54. And two free throws by Lomax with 16 seconds left sealed the win.

Memphis has had at least one player earn a spot on the Player of the Week, Freshman of the Week or Honor Roll each week since the season began. James Wiseman (Nov. 11), Lester Quinones (Nov. 18) and Boogie Ellis (Dec. 2) have earned Freshman of the Week recognition, while Precious Achiuwa was named Player of the Week Nov. 25.

The 13th-ranked Tigers (8-1) play next at No. 19 Tennessee. The game at Thompson-Boling Arena tips off at 2 p.m. CT Saturday and will be carried by ESPN.
