American Athletic Conference honors Tigers' guard following win over NC State
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis guard Boogie Ellis was named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week Monday following his performance in the UofM's 83-78 victory over North Carolina State.
Ellis, a native of San Diego, scored a team-high 21 points – including 17 in the first half – to lead the Tigers to the Thanksgiving Day win in the Barclays Center Classic. Ellis made 7-of-11 field goals and each of his five free throws in the game. He was 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.
The 17 first-half points by Ellis allowed the 16th-ranked Tigers to take a 55-39 lead at halftime. Ellis made 6-of-8 field goals in the first half and each of his two 3-point attempts. The 21 points were one shy of his career-high.
Ellis became the fourth Tiger to be honored by the American this season. James Wiseman was Freshman of the Week on Nov. 11; Lester Quinones was Freshman of the Week on Nov. 18 and Precious Achiuwa was named Player of the Week Nov. 25.
The Tigers (6-1) resume play at 8 p.m. Tuesday night at FedExForum against Bradley. The game will be shown by CBS Sports Network.
