The Tigers enter the weekend after taking a ninth-consecutive season-opening win on Tuesday. Newcomers played key roles in the 57-51 win over Alcorn State. Three Tigers tied for team-lead with 11 points, including freshman Lanetta Williams and junior Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu. Williams also added a team-leading nine rebounds and five blocks to her scoring total.
Â
The five blocks by Williams marked the third-most in a single game by a freshman in program history.
Â
A strong defensive identity was evident in the win, as Memphis held the visiting Lady Braves to 29.7 percent shooting, including a second quarter field goal percentage of 15.4 percent. The win marked the first time an opponent had two quarters of single-digit scoring since last season's contest against Samford.
Â
Another performance of note from Tuesday was sophomore Jamirah Shutes. One of the 11-point scorers on the night, she chipped in career-highs with six assists and five steals. Forcing 25 turnovers, Memphis scored 16 points off of Alcorn State turnovers.
Â
Saturday will mark the sixth time the Tigers and Colonels will face off on the court. Memphis has won each of the previous five outings, including the last time the teams squared off in 2003.
Â
Scouting the Colonels
Eastern Kentucky visits the Bluff City having notched a win in its opening game, defeating Northern Kentucky 69-62 on Wednesday. Shay Solomon led the way with 12 points off the bench, with all scorers notching at least six points in the win.
Â
The Colonels used the three-ball to take the victory, knocking down 11 triples, compared to NKU's four. All nine scorers hit at least one three-pointer in the win.
Â
Eastern Kentucky was picked to finish 12th in the Ohio Valley Conference's preseason poll. Led by first-year head coach Samantha Williams, the Colonels look to improve after finishing last season 2-27.
